"WHISTLEY WOOFERS WEEKEND 2015
"After the success of last year’s fund raiser for Bernese Welfare, Tim Williams and Margaret
Bailey kindly offered to host another Whistley Woofers Weekend on May 9th and 10th at their
property at Pimlico, between Silverstone and Brackley.
"With a record 18 caravans and tents booked in, Margaret, Roy and Glenn were kept busy
mowing the grass and preparing the pitches and hook-ups, while Tim cleared the building
rubble from the drive and laid down some more hard core.
"With only occasional rain in the days before the event, the ground stayed firm and mud
free, although despite the sun, the wind kept the temperature down a bit which was great
for the dogs even if we’d have liked it a bit warmer. Happily the weekend stayed dry apart
from one very sharp shower on the Saturday which sent everyone running for the shelter
of the gazebos.
"Several ring events were held on the Saturday, judged by Michelle Barsby while on
Sunday Jean Hellingsworth judged the fun races and Pete Garrard judged the fun obstacle
course which proved a great success and provided considerable amusement to the
spectators too, especially trying to dribble a very light ball through the cones in a fairly
"Apple Bobbing and Temptation Alley were available on both days, as was this year's variation
of the calamity carting course – there were several elements which depended on a degree of
luck, but being 7ft tall, good at fishing and dressing up and an expert at darts would have
provided a distinct advantage!
"We were also joined by two Rally Obedience Judges who had started carting with their
German Shepherd, Bruno, and wanted some advice and feedback on what they were doing.
Bruno was doing just fine and we only had to provide a few minor suggestions to enhance
their experience. They also enjoyed participating in some of the ring events with their Border
Terriers and declared that they had thoroughly enjoyed the weekend.
"On the Saturday evening, we all socialised around the gazebos and celebrated Jean
Hellingsworth’s birthday while being entertained by Malcolm Dewick on the keyboard and
Martyn Bullock on guitar. Pete Garrard also provided a brief, humorous interlude with a
couple of ditties adapted to include some of the carters.
"The results of the ring events are not yet to hand, but the winners of the Non-Ring events
Calamity Cart Course – Dave once again
Apple Bobbing – Vicky & Coby – 4 apples
Temptation Alley – Maureen & Suzie – 1.98 seconds
Fun Obstacle Course – Bruce & Dixie – 47.70 seconds
"A very impressive £930 was raised for Bernese Welfare, to which was added the money
raised by the World Wide Bernese Walk, sales of donated items and another donation
giving a total of £1030; a big vote of thanks is due to Albion Meat Products who very kindly
sponsored the prizes and especially to Maggie, Tim, Roy, Glenn, Wendy, Jean and Michelle
and all those who took part for all their hard work in offering, preparing, organising,
devising, running, judging and participating in such an enjoyable and worthwhile event."
